What Do You See Every Day?

What's In Your Environment

They say, "You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with."  True enough.  But we can't always control precisely whom we spend time with--at least in the short term.

Here's something you can control a lot more.  What's in your space?  What's in your environment?  What's on your computer screen?  In short, might you also be "the average of your environment more broadly"--not just the people?

What's In Your Space?

If you want to make a change in your life, you should engineer:

What's on your electronic screens?

What do you look at all day?

What does your desktop show you?

What is the "wallpaper" on the computer?

What websites do you spend the most time visiting?

What apps are on your phone?

What's on your calendar?

Ever heard the phrase, "If it isn't on the calendar, it doesn't get done?"  So what's on your
       calendar?

What do you choose to remove from it?

Is it an electronic or physical calendar or both?

What's in your inbox?

What email lists can you subscribe to move you ahead?

And what emails subscriptions should you remove
       yourself from?

Does your inbox reflect your priorities?  If not, how can you push it in that direction?

What's in your room?

Want to get more exercise?  Leave your gym clothes out where you always see them (but
not where you can trip on them).

Want to be a writer?  Put Stephen King's On Writing (a great book, by the way) out where
you see it all the time.

Your Environment Will Nudge You In The Right Direction Or Hold You Back

You get the idea.  Build your environment to reflect what you care about and your goals (and also what you find beautiful and joyful).  This is no panacea, but trust me when I say that what surrounds you all the time will dramatically influence your behavior, mood, and focus.  It's easy and fun to engineer.  Why not give it a try?
